This lick is the first chord of the standard “Cry Me a River,” played over a dominant chord. In the original song the lick is a minor lick starting on scale degree 2 of a minor chord:
2 1 5 b3 2 1
For our purposes, you’re going to play a dominant chord a half step down from the minor chord. The lick stays the same, but the numbers are different, as it’s over a dominant chord:
#9 b9 b13 3 #9 b9
It resolves well to 5 4 3 of the one chord OR the 5 4 b3 of the minor one chord.
The sheet music and the video should help to further clarify the lick.
