HERE’S WHAT OUR AMAZING STUDENTS SAY

We’ve helped thousands of musicians playing all sorts of instruments take their jazz playing to the next level. Here’s what they have to say:

"The Inner Circle is, in my opinion, the best place to go for online jazz education content. From beginner 101 courses, to longer, more in-depth offerings, there is something for all players. Speaking of all players, there are instrument-specific offerings as well. The Jazz Standards Club is always there to build a broad repertoire and greater understanding. Brent, Brett, and the team consistently ‘bring it’ and make themselves available in the forums as well. Highly recommended from an almost-two-year member!"
Russ
Russ from USA, Guitar
"I have no harmonic background and play a melodic instrument. I have always struggled with chord changes. Here is where the LJS Inner Circle comes in, which is a perfect tool to really get understand jazz harmony and how to apply the changes. Brent has done an incredible job and the peer support through different community discussion blogs is excellent. I highly recommend the Inner Circle. You won't regret it."
Bruce
Bruce from Holland, Trumpet
"Since joining the Inner Circle, my approach to practice and learning new jazz standards has fundamentally changed. While I focus on the monthly jazz standard study, I use some of the the other courses to complement and transform my learning. Listening and learning by ear, exploring the tones in the chords and scales, and finally learning jazz language from the etudes and the recordings is a great thrill for me. I am thankful to have found this resource- I should have 10 years ago!"
Jens
Jens from Germany, Guitar
"There are an amazing number of resources available through the LJS Inner Circle membership. I have been working on this month's jazz standard and already feel that my improvisation has improved tremendously and know it will continue to do so. Also, the interaction amongst the members is fantastic. I have no regrets about joining and very much look forward to developing my skills further through my membership in the LJS Inner Circle."

"I work as a musician on cruise ships and I started the Jazz Blues Accelerator Course in the Inner Circle a couple weeks ago. Right now I’m on a ship going through the Caribbean and playing every day different music for the guests, so I thought it could be very hard for me to do a course or develop new material, but I started it anyways and it is going really well! The fact that it is not necessary to practice a lot of time and to know the exact thing to do is very good and makes the process faster!"
Santiago
Santiago from Argentina
"Before joining the Inner Circle I felt I had a big gap in my musical education regarding jazz in general, jazz harmony and listening skills. Since joining, my understanding, appreciation and respect for jazz has skyrocketed. My ear and musicianship has improved enough so that I can jam with other musicians. I highly recommend the Inner Circle for any musician who wants to improve their musicianship which to me is the foundation for reaching any musical goal!""

"You want to learn Jazz the way great jazz cats learned - through learning jazz standards - and Brent and his team will take you there. It doesn’t hurt that you will be learning alongside other enthusiasts. Try it, you won’t be disappointed!"

"I have just started the Inner Circle but I can already see how beneficial it will be. I have always struggled to learn tunes and the systematic approach used by Learn Jazz Standards is making it easy to learn the tune. I highly recommend this program, especially to anyone who struggles to learn tunes like me."

"I have struggled with methodically learning jazz standards and licks. The Inner Circle has helped to keep me focused on learning standards. The chord charts and analysis are very helpful in understanding musical structure. The multiple resources offered with each tune provide considerable support in learning and improvising. I also love the additional learning videos for various topics, such as learning jazz blues. I would recommend the Inner Circle because the structured learning approach helps to document progress, abundance of resources, community support, and opportunities for getting specific questions answered."

"Brent’s Learn Jazz Standards platform which I’ve followed for a few years, and especially the Inner Circle, offers a great opportunity not only to take different courses, get resource material with an analytic approach and backing tracks but most important to be musically active by posting audio-or video files of your playing and having a discussion forum where you can exchange ideas and tips with other members. So you actually have feedback on what you and others are doing. After just a few weeks in the Inner Circle, I feel that I am becoming already a more open-minded player. I can highly recommend joining the Inner Circle!"

"Before joining the Inner Circle, I didn’t know which songs to learn/practice and had no method to understand the musical structure of a song, the music theory behind it, the tools to learn/play it or any idea on how to improvise over it. The Inner Circle has given me a method to playing jazz standards and tools to be a better musician and improviser. I recommend joining the Inner Circle if you love music and want to grow as a musician in general (even if you are not interested in jazz). The method and the theory involved in each study will make you a better musician and you will have fun adding songs to your repertoire."

"I have learned a lot from being a member of the Inner Circle. Joining the Inner Circle was the best thing I did. I have been playing the sax for quite a while but have never been able to catch up. Now I am more than happy playing the sax and jazzing around and I am looking forward to more."

"Just joined the Inner Circle two weeks ago after hitting the learning jazz wall. I needed some structured lessons to advance. I have been very pleased with my progress and the practical and theoretical merging of this website . Listening, memorizing, theory, practical exercises have all been merged to help the player of any level . I am excited about my jazz learning future!"

"I began immersing myself within the Inner Circle program approximately 3 weeks ago. One of the biggest benefits to me, has been the course structure. It has forced me to focus on the process and helps me with clear, step by step achievable goals. Beginner, intermediate or advanced, it doesn't matter, there is something for everyone."

I’ve been practicing with this program for a year now, and my playing has improved considerably. Another thing I’ve noticed is that my appreciation for recorded jazz has deepened because I can recognize and understand much more of what the pros are doing. I heartily recommend joining!"

"Most instructors or methods found on-line just teach you how to play something. I am finding Learn Jazz Standards is teaching me how to understand jazz. Since the Inner Circle isn't just focused on one instrument, I am learning about the structure of music and how it creates jazz. Nothing is out there that helps you learn this.

Marco from USA, Bass
"I joined the Inner Circle because I want to learn to play jazz standards with others in the band. Initially I was hesitant if was the right platform for me but as it turns out, I find the materials in the Inner Circle well structured and organized. Not only that, there are tons of very useful materials which I really like and I would highly recommend this to anyone serious about learning jazz!"

"I just want to say that for someone who took up playing an instrument at age 60, I think I have achieved more than I could have expected in music in general and jazz specifically. And really, I owe most of that to Learn Jazz Standards and the Inner Circle.

Apart from everything I’ve learned from courses and from doing the jazz standard club each month, posting my work and getting feedback has been invaluable in helping me to improve and gain confidence in my playing."
Mally
Harold from Australia, Flute
"Joining the Inner Circle gave me a clear method, a community so I didn't have to be alone, and choice of when and how much I study. It's even helping me be kinder to myself about how much I study. Small chunks with specific purpose are now what my practice sessions are made of and it's so much more efficient.

I love how I can choose my learning level. If you're a beginner, you're welcome and the steps are clear. If you're advanced, there's increased and musically engaging challenge in your learning path. I love how the Inner Circle meets me where I'm at and shows me my next steps."
Nicky
Nicky from Italy, Vocal
I like the Inner Circle because there is someone always there to respond to your questions and getting feedback from musicians that are at the same level or higher helps a lot. It gives me motivation and encouragement to keep trying.

I recommend joining the Inner Circle because of the large list of resources, monthly masterminds, and being able to post and get a lot of feedback from other members feels great and it's good to find out what other musicians think you are doing right and what you are doing wrong.

"I joined last May and can say that without doubt my abilities and technique have moved along in leaps and bounds (in comparison with my starting point), and I´m practicing with purpose every time I pick up my instrument. In a nutshell, I couldn´t be happier with my decision to join the LJS Inner Circle as I'm convinced that my music will continue to benefit. All of this, at an affordable price makes it, in my humble opinion a no Brainer!"

"Unfortunately, my day job is very demanding, limiting the amount of time I have for practicing. I wanted to learn to improvise and express myself musically, but was not making as much progress as I would have liked. Joining the Inner Circle has been a great help in jump starting my progress. The resources are amazingly helpful in learning tunes, understanding how the harmony works, and learning the jazz language which leads to better soloing. I highly recommend the Learn Jazz Standards Inner Circle!"

"I'm finishing off my first course in the Inner Circle at the moment and really enjoy how achievable the lessons are. You really feel like you're achieving something. For example, I actually learned a tune by ear. The LIST process really works! I'm looking forward to learning more standards and progressing in my bass playing."

Jurgen from Ireland, Bass
"Joining the Learn Jazz Standards Inner Circle was the best thing that happened in my musical live. The improvements I’ve made in the last 2 years are tremendous compared to the 10 years I’ve spent trying to learn jazz by myself, taking nonsensical information here and there on the Internet.

Hearing more advanced members playing helps me to identify little steps that I can do to improve myself. I connect myself to the site every day and made really good musician friends I can count on to progress in my Jazz journey!"
Andre
Andre from Belgium, Saxophone/PIano/Harmonica
"Prior to joining the Inner Circle my attempts at improvised jazz solos were quite rudimentary. I was following chord changes usually via the tonic notes and key signature, but the richer "jazz" notes were often missing and I was rarely hitting the chord changes cleanly. I also was not able to develop a theme or melodic line in most of my solos.

The Inner Circle has helped me to learn jazz theory and has also helped me to develop my listening skills and ability to play by ear. The variety, content, structure and access to a broad community provide everything the student of jazz needs to progress at their own pace. In my opinion, it is a good value for money, and I heartily recommend it."
Patrick
Patrick from Canada, Trumpet
"What I found out by joining the Inner Circle, is that you not only get step-by-step instruction, there is also the emphasis on practical application of every learning activity add to that is a thriving community of learners helping each other achieve each others goals. If you are like me and desiring to learn to play jazz with your instrument, I invite you to try the Inner Circle and you will be surprised how learning jazz can be within your grasp. I am only in my first month going through the initial studies, yet I am already seeing so much progress and I begin to see myself developing a momentum for learning. I am confident that in just a matter of time I will be able to skillfully improvise and confidently play walking bass parts."

"I made good progress on my instrument, but only when I found Brent's Learn Jazz Standards site and subscribed to courses the jazz mystery began to unveil. Now, I am deep in the "30 Steps to Better Jazz Playing" course and am able to do things, which I never thought possible. I also have a sax teacher who is a University trained jazz musician and she too finds Brent's courses excellent, not more to say I guess, but that I wholeheartedly recommend the Learn Jazz Standards Inner Circle, this is true value for money!"
Johannes

"Before joining the Inner Circle, I had an issue with focusing on "what to practice." The Inner Circle has helped with this problem by giving a set goal and breaking the steps to meeting that goal into measurable pieces. This makes everything easier by simplifying and taking the work out of coming up with a practice regimen on my own. I'd recommend the Inner Circle to anyone who needs help with the "what to practice" problem!"

"I have been a member of the Inner Circle for many years already, and I have benefitted from it very much. The concept is unique: all of the instruments are covered, there are separate (technical) courses for various instruments and the highlights for me are the monthly tunes that are presented to study. These are supported by written materials and a 30-minute video where the song for the month is analyzed. A very practical and stimulating source to learn a lot!"

"I feel like a jazz musician now and every day picking up my guitar is a pure joy. The courses in the Inner Circle are well structured so that you make steady progress while learning key concepts like chord tones, guide tones, enclosures, etc. The backing tracks provided are great for improving ability to "feel" the rhythm. Tuition is very reasonable and I always feel like I'm getting way more from this membership than any of the others that I've tried and let lapse. Before I joined the Inner Circle, I had never published any of my arrangements for the public. Now I have over a dozen, some of which I am quite proud of, and some of which let me see where I need to improve. But now they sound like music instead just a collection of notes, and being part of the Inner Circle is key to my progress."
Frank
Frank from USA, Guitar
"A lot of the problems I had before joining the Inner Circle were that I just didn't understand different things in jazz as far as improvisation goes. This made me afraid to even try improv when playing in groups growing up and also made me shy away from teaching it as I became a jazz teacher. I never had a teacher that really went through what the different things mean or how to actually improvise. The Inner Circle has really helped me break some things down and go through them in a way that I hoped my teachers had done. I like that with the Inner Circle you can go your own speed and come back to it whenever you want. I would totally recommend the Inner Circle for anyone who wants to get better at anything related to jazz. The Inner Circle has something for everyone and I feel like it doesn't matter your skill level, you can always improve."
Stacey

"I used to follow Brent´s videos , very educational and so well played , so I decided to give the Inner Circle membership a try. When starting to work with the program I felt amazed, so many sources to learn from, covering and showing the necessary tools to learn to play an understand jazz standards. Questions are answered to get us back in the track of learning. I have much better knowledge of the Jazz language and improving my piano playing. I strongly recommend to join the Inner Circle for all of these reasons. I take this opportunity to say hi to the support team which had being so helpful, and the teachers ,ready to help us."

"Why do I love to be part of the LJS Inner Circle? It has given me a wider look at jazz. Music is not only reading notes. You can sing and mimic a piece. Ear training is of help. The 101 courses for rhythm and for piano are just what I need. In the Jazz Saxophone Accelerator I have learned new things about my primary instrument. It is nicer to do my jazz journey in the company of the Inner Circle community."

"The Learn Jazz Standards website is great, and the Inner Circle is probably the best part of it. The courses, instructors, and the other students are all helpful — there's a lifetime of information and fun packed in there, and so I need the content to stay up FOREVER! I'd be lost without it."

Gordon from USA, Guitar
"I've tried various approaches with jazz, from scales to arpeggios but not really "cracked the code". I'd find myself repeating the same licks and feeling a bit locked in to a limited number of ideas. I joined the Inner Circle to try to break out of those limitations. I felt I needed a bit of direction and structure in learning how to play jazz. I've been a member for only about three weeks, but I already feel the benefits of following the programs set out by Brent and his team. I've learned two new tunes (for me) and am finding that learning and improving are central to the mantra of this organization. I feel like this is the right place for me, and I wholeheartedly recommend the Inner Circle to anyone who is trying to learn and/or develop his or her jazz chops."

"I really made so much progress I couldn't have imagined a year ago!

I started to play in the Jazz band of the local music school, had my first gig together with my husband which was really great, and now I am preparing for a recording a local band asked me to do with them... I'm really excited about my musical way and feel like I got a good working flow.

I love the L.I.S.T process so much, it changed my whole way of making music. I can learn from the grand masters now - I am really thankful for that!

Thank you so much for everything!"

"The Inner Circle has a variety of courses to help with ear training, jazz basics, etc. There is a good balance of theory and playing. I really enjoy the Jazz Standards Club, where we really focus on one standard a month. What is great, since this is my passion, not my career, is that I can do it at my own pace, when I have time and still have all of the resources at my fingertips. The Community Forums provide a great opportunity to interact and share experiences with others that share similar challenges, as well as provide other learning opportunities. I highly recommend joining the Inner Circle, it provides great learning opportunities for players at all levels!"

"I've always struggled with how to connect chords together melodically when soloing over a jazz standard. Part of the reason why is that I really did not "know" the harmonic structure of the tune. Brent provides guide tone exercises, chord exercises, some contrafacts, and a video walk-through of each jazz standard. Directed, structured practice is the key to learning anything, especially how to play jazz. Brent's courses, with their emphasis on recording yourself, have really helped me. They'll help anyone willing to dedicate a bit of focused practice time. It's fun to see improvement, and this enjoyment makes me look forward to my daily practice time. Thank you, Brent."

"Since joining the Inner Circle, I have been able to be far more organized with how I approach my practice sessions and have definitely seen improvement. The frameworks of the lessons are super organized and provide the structure I can't always create spontaneously for myself. I highly recommend it for any jazz musicians of any level. The lessons are surprisingly applicable to beginners and pros alike."

"The Inner Circle is a very unique way of solving problems that relate to learning and performing tunes. I have learned how to recognize key centers within tunes which makes soloing easier than trying to figure out and memorize every chord while identifying destination chords within the tune. Each lesson allows you to learn at your own pace, and still be very productive. The associated 101 courses allow you to focus on a specific problem and then apply it to the "jazz standard of the month". The posting and interaction with other members, if you choose to, provides great feedback that is helpful in a non-threatening format."

Grandon from USA, Vibraphone
"After years of trying different approaches with no real results, I finally decided I would give the Inner Circle a try. With the help of the Inner Circle lessons, I am on my way to becoming an actual jazz player/improviser. You don't need to practice 5 hours a day to see improvements. Just 30 to 60 minutes of focused practice sessions a few times a week will enable you to see improvements. The Inner Circle shows you how to do this in clear and concise steps. Definitely give it a try!"
Eric
Eric from USA, Accordion
"Since joining the Inner Circle, I have received amazing instruction that has helped me in my practice routines and overall playing! What I like most about the Inner Circle, is that it is not only for one specific instrument, but helps one's overall musicianship and confidence in playing jazz with other musicians. For this reason, I personally feel that it far exceeds other jazz courses and memberships out there. Highly recommend!"

"Learn Jazz Standards is the best system I have seen so far for learning jazz improvisation. I became frustrated by the typical “get in touch with your inner feelings” approach and the “learn all these riffs and it’ll rub off on you” approach. I needed something more concrete. LJS supplied useful concepts that gave me a structure to begin my journey.

I also liked the flexibility to choose which lessons I needed. I had been taking private lessons from a good instructor, but he had a set lesson plan that he used for all of his students. As an adult student, I could identify my deficiencies, and LJS allowed me to concentrate on those."
