“Whisper Not” is a tune written by Benny Golson. Art Blakey used this tune while Golson was a member of the Jazz Messengers. Be sure to check out the recording of the Jazz Messengers playing this tune. I would recommend using this recording to learn the song. Things you should look out for are hits during the melody, a shout chorus after the solos and a tag ending. These three things are often dismissed or overlooked but are very important parts of this composition.
An example would be ending the song tagging the last four bars of the A section. I have seen this mistake happen at jam sessions, however the ending needs to be there in order to stay true to Benny Golson’s composition. It is definitely worth doing your homework in order to get this tune right!
