“Skylark” is a tune written by the great Hoagy Carmichael with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The tune was written in 1941 and Johnny Mercer struggled for a year after he received the music from Carmichael to come up with the right lyrics. The lyrics express Mercer’s romance with Judy Garland, with whom he had and affair.

This tune is most often performed as a ballad though it has been presented in a variety of styles over the years. This is a tune that musicians have come up with a lot of different changes for, so it is important to do your research on this one. We have done our best to provide several different options for chord changes on our charts bellow, representing the consensus of multiple different recordings and charts.
This tune is performed in many different keys but the most common “jam session key” is Eb major.
