“Pannonica” is a tune written by Thelonius Monk. The tune was written in honor of Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter who was a British-born jazz patroness and writer. She was friends to a lot of jazz musicians during the bebop era including Charlie Parker and Mary Lou Williams. Pannonica features all that is unique and great about Monk’s compositions; key center rotations, melodies based on chord extensions, tonal and modal harmony…ect. A great resource that was used to provide you accurate changes in the chord charts below was the Thelonius Monk Fakebook. This book features accurate transcriptions of Monk tunes done by NYC guitarist Steve Cardenas(Paul Motian septet, Steve Swallow Quintet, Ben Allison Band). This is the best source for Monk tunes that is available, I would highly suggest purchasing this book!
