“Moment’s Notice” is a tune written by the great tenor saxophonist John Coltrane. It was recorded on his famous 1957 record “Blue Train”. This composition in some ways foreshadows the music that Coltrane would later write. It features fast-moving, harmonic changes. Coltrane would later further develop these concepts on tunes such as “Giant Steps” and “26-2”.
When learning this tune, pay attention to the intro as it is part of the song. Be sure to listen to the original recording to learn the hits and rhythmic figures used during the melody. These are very important to the tune. Some of these chromatically shifting key centers can make blowing over the form a little bit difficult, so this one is definitely worth spending some time on.
