Autumn Leaves-Part 2

October 4, 2010 in Jazz Standards

Autumn Leaves is one of the most important jazz standards that you MUST know, and so I’ve put up 2 more playalongs and some additional recordings. It’s usually played in Bb/Gm or G/Em. It’s really in the minor key, but it moves in and out of the major key often enough that it is worth listing it in both keys. If someone asks me what key we should play it in on the bandstand, I’d say either Gm or Em, or I might list both keys. I wouldn’t say just the major key; the last chord is the tonic minor, [...]

Blues for Alice with Jazz Etude

July 21, 2010 in Jazz Standards

Learning to navigate Blues for Alice is like taking the training wheels off the blues. www.flickr.com/photos/23596957@N02/2348934926 This isn’t just I, IV, and V chords. It’s called “backdoor” blues changes because instead of going from F to Bb7, up, it goes through the backdoor, down to Em7b5 (into a ii-7b5-V7-i in the relative minor, D minor). I can tell whether or not people have done their homework on this tune when I hear them improvise in bar 4, bar 6, and bar 8. These measures contain trick nuances, and you really can’t navigate them with straight major and minor pentatonics. Here [...]

Impressions by John Coltrane

June 25, 2010 in Jazz Standards

This is one of my favorite tunes, and it’s definitely my favorite play along I’ve created so far! It’s the most modern sounding of the play alongs, being very much jazz with a hint of hop-hop. I love it! Learn this tune. It has the same changes as So What, which makes sense because Trane was in Miles’ band. It’s a much faster tune than So What, however, and it’s more aggressive. There Is No Greater Love

June 24, 2010 in Jazz Standards

I love this tune! The Real Book has the third chord as an Ab7, though the majority of recordings I’ve found seem to prefer a D-7. I wouldn’t say the Ab7 is necessarily “wrong” though, as several some recordings use the Ab7. Learn to navigate both, and use your ears at jam sessions! In a Mellow Tone-AMAZING Dizzy Gillespie/Clark Terry/Gene Harris Video

June 16, 2010 in Jazz Standards

This is such a great standard when done right. However, “In a Mellow Tone” Don’t Mean a Thing, If It Ain’t Got that Swing! Listen to the way Dizzy and his group does it. What a burnin’ chart! I changed the way I do my play alongs today, and I’d like some comments. See if you like it better. I did the drums differently, and I’d like to know what you think. Feel free to leave comments. On the Sunny Side of the Street

June 5, 2010 in Jazz Standards

This is such a great standard tune, written in 1930 by Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields. At least, that’s what history tells us. Rumor has it that Fats Waller may have penned the tune and sold the rights, but who knows? At any rate, we know that it’s a great standard to blow over. This tune is done in many keys. I’ve listened to many recordings, and I’ve heard the tune in C, Bb (these being the most common), Ab, G, Eb, and even D. Instrumentalists seem to gravitate toward the key of C, so that’s what I’ve put on [...]
