Corcovado

We are taking a quick break from the blues series today to break things up just a bit. The 2 week blues series will resume tomorrow. This is a wonderful bossa nova tune by Antonio Carlos Jobim. It’s also known as “Quiet Nights and Quiet Stars,” which is the first lyric of the tune when sung in English. It was original written in Portuguese. Corcovado Mountain overlooks Rio de Janeiro.  Corcovado means “hunchback” in Portuguese.  Look at the first image, and you will know how Corcovado Mountain got its name! On Green Dolphin Street

This famous tune was made for a 1947 movie, “Green Dolphin Street,” and is known for switching back and forth between latin and swing feels, and for the pedal I underneath changing harmonies for the first 7 bars of the A section.  The form is basically ABAB, with the second B being different than the first B.  It’s a 32 bar song form, as is so common in the jazz idiom. Left-Hand Comping Handout: St. Thomas

Learn Jazz Standards is a website for all instrumentalists, and even vocalists; however, given that piano is my primary instrument, I will occasionally put some piano articles up. Also, piano is the most useful instrument for all musicians. There is a reason that all music majors take “piano proficiency” rather than “banjo proficiency!” All jazz musicians should study harmony on the piano. In my opinion, one of the best ways to teach jazz piano is to teach voicings first. If students learn good jazz voicings for the left hand and for both hands, then a good jazz sound will follow. Meditation by Antonio Carlos Jobim

Mediation is a nice bossa nova. I like the tune, but it’s connected to a painful experience for me. The first time it was called on me I was playing piano with trumpet player Carl Saunders at a jam session. I didn’t know the tune at the time (or a couple others he called), and I was pretty embarrassed. I’m a big fan of Carl, and I wanted him to respect my playing.
