Corcovado

August 20, 2010 in Jazz Standards

We are taking a quick break from the blues series today to break things up just a bit. The 2 week blues series will resume tomorrow. This is a wonderful bossa nova tune by Antonio Carlos Jobim. It’s also known as “Quiet Nights and Quiet Stars,” which is the first lyric of the tune when sung in English. It was original written in Portuguese. Meditation by Antonio Carlos Jobim

Mediation is a nice bossa nova. I like the tune, but it’s connected to a painful experience for me. The first time it was called on me I was playing piano with trumpet player Carl Saunders at a jam session. I didn’t know the tune at the time (or a couple others he called), and I was pretty embarrassed. I’m a big fan of Carl, and I wanted him to respect my playing. I vowed to learn a ton of standards, and the result is this website! This tune is played most commonly in the key of C.  However, lots [...]

Ceora by Lee Morgan

June 12, 2010 in Jazz Standards

This is a great little jazz original by Lee Morgan. It’s in the Real Book, and is a great bossa nova, but it’s a bit tricky. The melody in the Real Book on measure 32 is correct, but they play it ONLY ON THE LAST TIME THROUGH. The first time through the head, the band plays a simpler version of the melody on the last bar. Listen, and you’ll understand. Enjoy!
