Blank Keyboard Diagrams

September 7, 2010 in Uncategorized

I’ve been wanting to find a good blank keyboard diagram,  but I have been unable to find anything helpful.  This is my attempt to make my own blank diagram for myself in my teaching and for anyone else who may benefit from the same approach.  Pictures should be used more often to help pianists learn.  Guitarists have elaborate systems to remember voicings; why can’t keyboard players use the same thing adapted to their instrument?  I’m not a graphic designer, but I came up with something I think will be useable. I found an image at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:My_Keyboard.jpg, and I adapted the [...]

Sweet Georgia Brown

September 6, 2010 in Jazz Standards

Some jazz standards are relatively unknown to people who don’t listen to jazz. Sweet Georgia Brown, though, is known by EVERYONE, mainly because the Harlem Globetrotters have been using the tune as their theme song since 1952. Even fiddlers love this song, and it’s a popular bluegrass tune in addition to being a great jazz tune. The tune, written by Ben Bernie, Maceo Pinkard, and lyricist Kenneth Casey, was first published in 1925. Rather, 1925 seems to be the most widely accepted date, although some people suspect the film was made in 1922 or 1924. 1925 was certainly the year [...]

The problem with iTunes

September 4, 2010 in Uncategorized

The Superiority of Apple So, I have a personal story I though I would share, for a little change of pace. Have you ever used the iTunes store? I would not recommend it, although my opinion has been softened today because iTunes support is actually pretty good. I like Apple a lot as a company, and I do like most of the products they put out. In my opinion their computers are superior, and they are basically a necessity for me with this website. For one thing, the Spotlight feature, with it’s lightning quick searches, has been very valuable. I’m [...]

Just Friends

September 3, 2010 in Jazz Standards

Just Friends is a very important standard. It was first written as a ballad, but Charlie Parker changed all of that with his “With Strings” recording. It is now played as an uptempo chart most of the time. It’s a fun tune with nice changes. It’s most commonly played in F or G, but the first chord starts on the IV (Bb in the key of F, C in the key of G). Even though F or G seem to be the most common keys, Parker, Stitt, and Woods all did it in Ab (below). Just Friends in G pdf [...]

15 Most Common Guitar Chords

September 2, 2010 in Uncategorized

These are the 15 most common chords. All guitarists need to know them, regardless of what style they play. These are the first chords everyone must know. Pop and folk music use these chords ALL the time. Even worship guitar in many churches uses mostly these chords. However, there is more to music than these 15 chords. This post is dedicated to the thousands of guitarists out there who are learning or have learned these basic chords, but have not yet taken the jump into become a jazz player. These 15 chords are ubiquitous in pop music today. Normally these [...]

Learning the Notes on the Guitar Fretboard

August 31, 2010 in Uncategorized

By Brian Prunka from http://jazzscience.blogspot.com/2010/02/guitar-players-only-learn-all-notes-on.html Learning the neck of the guitar is very important.  It is limiting to play the guitar without knowing what notes you are playing.  Most other instrumentalists ALWAYS know what note they are playing.  However, many guitarists, even some experienced ones, avoid learning the notes on the fretboard, maybe because it is difficult to visualize the notes.  This limits their musicianship.  There is a difference between someone who is good at guitar gymnastics/pyrotechnics and a musician who happens to play the guitar.  It’s much better to be a musician. The above diagram from jazzscience.blogspot.com helps you [...]

List of Blues Heads

August 28, 2010 in Jazz Standards, Learning Jazz

This is the last post in a two week series on the blues in all keys. Here is a list of blues tunes you can learn. Have fun with them! Most of them can be practiced with the play alongs on the other posts in the series. One of my favorite things I’ve ever done at a gig is going back and forth playing blues heads. I was playing piano, and my friend Jake VanPaepeghem played guitar. We just played as many blues heads as we could think of, one after the next, until we ran out! It was spontaneous [...]
