D Rhythm Changes-Jazz Waltz

September 20, 2010 in Jazz Standards

For a change of pace, the playalong is in 3/4 time.  It’s pretty rare to hear rhythm changes in 3/4.  Every change lasts not 2 beats, but 1.5 beats (dotted quarter note).  This is not a very common key for rhythm changes. Blues in All 12 Keys

September 14, 2010 in Jazz Standards

This page links to my 13 other posts on the Blues in All 12 Keys. The 13th post is a list of blues tunes. The blues is the most common progression in jazz, and so you’d better practice! The blues are everywhere. Also, inflecting other tunes with the blues is often a very tasty way of playing, even if they aren’t blues tunes. Many great jazz players have a total mastery of the blues. Great Resource for Guitar Technique and Sight Reading

September 13, 2010 in Learning Jazz

I saw a post by Vic Juris on the All About Jazz Forum recommending the Kreutzer Violin Studies as a way of improving your guitar technique.  If it’s good enough for Vic Juris, I’m definitely using it.  The Study  seems like a pretty good resource for some guitar sight reading as well, although the primary purpose seems to be technical. It was adapted for the guitar by Allen Hanlon, and it is now out of print. Scott Abene of Guitarheads.org put the book on his website. I’m definitely going to be using this in my teaching and in my own [...]

Yardbird Suite

September 11, 2010 in Jazz Standards

This is among Charlie Parker’s most melodic heads. It’s a fantastic tune to blow over, and it’s more accessible than many of Bird’s other tunes. He’s a story to illustrate what I mean: I have a friend who is a good blues guitarist. He does not particularly care for jazz, but he loves this song. It’s his favorite jazz song to play. I think that is a testament to how melodic the head is, especially for a bebop tune. Yardbird Suite is one of the most singable bebop heads, and the changes are great also. I love the quick ii-V [...]

Blank Keyboard Diagrams-3 Octaves

September 9, 2010 in Uncategorized

There aren’t many online resources that give you a pre-made diagram with multiple pictures of the piano keyboard in pdf form. You can find great pictures of a keyboard, but I have not found anything that is organized into something for showing students left-hand voicings, 2-handed voicings, or 2 octave scales. This is a resource that should exist. I will certainly use this in my teaching, and I hope you also find this useful. Here is the pdf worksheet with three 3-octave diagrams on the page: Blank Piano Diagrams-3 Octaves (.pdf) You can use this with keyboard voicings or scales. [...]
