Why You Should Throw Your Fakebook Away

January 28, 2012 in Uncategorized

GET RID OF YOUR FAKEBOOK! THROW THAT TRASH OUT! You know that little book on your shelf with the melodies and chord changes? Throw it in the trash. Right now. Do it. Ok, before you get motivated to throw it out, STOP-DON’T DO IT! I didn’t mean it. Maybe you bought your fakebook in 1971 and it’s got sentimental value…or maybe you JUST spent $40 on it last week.   I don’t actually think fakebooks are evil…HOWEVER this article is designed to help you rethink the purpose of a fakebook. Don’t throw your fakebook away, just use it judiciously. The [...]

An Update

October 24, 2011 in Uncategorized

Hi Everyone! Thank you for all the supportive comments! I’m really glad this has been a helpful resource. I am back in school now in my hometown in Idaho, and I haven’t had time to update in a while. I plan on leaving everything up, and I’ll add more material when the time is right. I’m working on getting new software to develop better play-a-longs for the website, and I expect to have some new songs up in the next couple of months. Good luck! We’re all in this together. Thanks for supporting jazz and jazz education. Camden

CAGED Scales for Guitar-C Major

October 19, 2010 in Uncategorized

Have you ever wanted to improve your solo chops on the guitar?  Do you ever feel limited by your lack of fretboard knowledge, especially higher on the neck?  Have you ever wanted to connect the different positions on the guitar together in a cohesive way?  If so, then the CAGED system may be a great way for you to expand your ability to solo on the guitar. Why CAGED? In a nutshell, CAGED Scales are one way of exploring all the regions of the neck of the guitar.  The system breaks down each region of the neck into an easy-to-navigate [...]

Blank Keyboard Diagrams-3 Octaves

September 9, 2010 in Uncategorized

There aren’t many online resources that give you a pre-made diagram with multiple pictures of the piano keyboard in pdf form. You can find great pictures of a keyboard, but I have not found anything that is organized into something for showing students left-hand voicings, 2-handed voicings, or 2 octave scales. This is a resource that should exist. I will certainly use this in my teaching, and I hope you also find this useful. Here is the pdf worksheet with three 3-octave diagrams on the page: Blank Piano Diagrams-3 Octaves (.pdf) You can use this with keyboard voicings or scales. [...]

Blank Keyboard Diagrams

September 7, 2010 in Uncategorized

I’ve been wanting to find a good blank keyboard diagram,  but I have been unable to find anything helpful.  This is my attempt to make my own blank diagram for myself in my teaching and for anyone else who may benefit from the same approach.  Pictures should be used more often to help pianists learn.  Guitarists have elaborate systems to remember voicings; why can’t keyboard players use the same thing adapted to their instrument?  I’m not a graphic designer, but I came up with something I think will be useable. I found an image at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:My_Keyboard.jpg, and I adapted the [...]

The problem with iTunes

September 4, 2010 in Uncategorized

The Superiority of Apple So, I have a personal story I though I would share, for a little change of pace. Have you ever used the iTunes store? I would not recommend it, although my opinion has been softened today because iTunes support is actually pretty good. I like Apple a lot as a company, and I do like most of the products they put out. In my opinion their computers are superior, and they are basically a necessity for me with this website. For one thing, the Spotlight feature, with it’s lightning quick searches, has been very valuable. I’m [...]

September 2, 2010 in Uncategorized

These are the 15 most common chords. All guitarists need to know them, regardless of what style they play. These are the first chords everyone must know. Pop and folk music use these chords ALL the time. Even worship guitar in many churches uses mostly these chords. However, there is more to music than these 15 chords. This post is dedicated to the thousands of guitarists out there who are learning or have learned these basic chords, but have not yet taken the jump into become a jazz player. These 15 chords are ubiquitous in pop music today. Normally these [...]
