Learning the Notes on the Guitar Fretboard

August 31, 2010 in Uncategorized

By Brian Prunka from http://jazzscience.blogspot.com/2010/02/guitar-players-only-learn-all-notes-on.html Learning the neck of the guitar is very important.  It is limiting to play the guitar without knowing what notes you are playing.  Most other instrumentalists ALWAYS know what note they are playing.  However, many guitarists, even some experienced ones, avoid learning the notes on the fretboard, maybe because it is difficult to visualize the notes.  This limits their musicianship.  There is a difference between someone who is good at guitar gymnastics/pyrotechnics and a musician who happens to play the guitar.  It’s much better to be a musician. The above diagram from jazzscience.blogspot.com helps you [...]

List of Blues Heads

August 28, 2010 in Jazz Standards, Learning Jazz

This is the last post in a two week series on the blues in all keys. Here is a list of blues tunes you can learn. Have fun with them! Most of them can be practiced with the play alongs on the other posts in the series. One of my favorite things I’ve ever done at a gig is going back and forth playing blues heads. I was playing piano, and my friend Jake VanPaepeghem played guitar. We just played as many blues heads as we could think of, one after the next, until we ran out! It was spontaneous [...]

Gb Blues

August 23, 2010 in Jazz Standards

Gb Blues is the 9th post in a two week series on the Blues in all Keys. This is not a very common key in any style of music. I would argue that it is be the LEAST common key for the blues, since E, A, and B are common in blues and rock, and the other flat and natural keys are more or less common in jazz. However, you should still learn it! Why stop at 11 keys when you can have 12? Gb Blues changes pdf Blues in Gb-C Instruments Blues in Gb-Bb Instruments Blues in Gb-Eb Instruments [...]

Corcovado

August 20, 2010 in Jazz Standards

We are taking a quick break from the blues series today to break things up just a bit. The 2 week blues series will resume tomorrow. This is a wonderful bossa nova tune by Antonio Carlos Jobim. It’s also known as “Quiet Nights and Quiet Stars,” which is the first lyric of the tune when sung in English. It was original written in Portuguese. Corcovado Mountain overlooks Rio de Janeiro.  Corcovado means “hunchback” in Portuguese.  Look at the first image, and you will know how Corcovado Mountain got its name! The world famous “Christ the Redeemer” statue is at the [...]
